Hardcore isn’t as compelling to me anymore. It’s difficult not to label something that repeats itself so often as a genre of empty words and empty music. But that isn’t the reality of the situation at all. I grew up with this music and it’s weird for me to say that I can’t stand a great deal of it now but it’s true. I really can’t listen to many of the bands of yore without cringing. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that so much of it never evolves. Each record a band puts out follows the formula of the last record, maybe with a few tweaks, maybe not. There are very few bands that do otherwise and I think it’s those bands that we should acknowledge. The ones who progress even if it’s consequences lead to a few hiccups down the road. Even if it leads to disbandment. I’m not saying you have to completely overhaul your sound, not that that would be a bad thing. I’m just saying challenge yourself, don’t jump on a bandwagon. Don’t give into an idea of how others think your music should be. Give into the idea of how you want your music to be, how it makes you feel when you create something for yourself. Give into that idea. If someone wants more of the same thing, don’t give it to them unless it’s truly what you want. If it’s what you believe in. And when the time comes to evolve don’t reject it. Jump on that bandwagon. I think the other issue at hand is that many people will say there is progression in the realm of hardcore but the outcome, the product of this “progression” makes the actual act of progressing seem so miniscule that people might lend their beliefs to it. To the act of refining a sound. A great deal of releases out there are just that, refinement. Not progression. If you confuse the two, that’s perfectly fine. I think it would be better as a musician to escape that but you’re entitled to do what you wish. I’m not here to say you shouldn’t do what you believe in. I’m here to say that if your tastes expand, don’t be afraid to give something new a try. It might have plentiful results.
From one fan in a band to another.
Sincerely,
Dallas
